"Rant on...... GE.... AKA Genetic Engineering...."

Genetic Engineering AKA GE Genetic engineering was a thing of the past, i mean future, well really its a very present issue from the time you wake up to go to sleep, and consciousness of this process ( I guess you could call it that) is only increasing.... Moms and Pops all over the world are going out to the shops and deciding what type of bacon to bring home... Genetically engineered, or "natural" foodstuff... Thats the first issue... (story of the three wells) well well well... a) Genetic Engineering as it's modernly/currently known is the process of changing the genetic makeup of an animal or plant (usually a common farm animal or common farmed food, and usually something drastic). For example, "they" GE chickens so that they grow enormous breasts so more meat, less chickens: Drawbacks for the chicken are that they can't move. Yup their breasts are so huge that they can't even move. Sounds a bit like people playing god to a lot of people, so thats a negative solution to the problem of not getting enough food around cheaply. Mom selects "free range", non-GE chickens. Fasho... no ones really worried cause the rest of the moms select the GE chicken, cause its whiter, bigger, and cheaper, o boy. Fuck your chicken.

Well well well. Marinate on this for a minute... b) Since the beginning of farming in the "Fertile Crescent", right?, people have been breeding their animals and plants to be the best at their "Job". The biggest tastiest Corns got regrown, same with tomatoes, apples and oranges. Cows got bred with the cows with the most milk, just cause, meat cows got bred with the meatiest cows, chickens with the ones with the biggest breasts, dogs who were the best at tracking, cats who were... umm... the cutest(i guess, if you have any information on why people kept domestic cats then i'm open for ideas) or perhaps the best at killing rats... So, now, since thats true, and with the arrival of a technique of changing these animals genetic features and traits faster, some of the same farmers that were breeding their animals, now simply inject them and save a lot of time and hassle... Hooray GEing. Only problem, the chickens life now sucks... and a lot of people want for whatever reason, happy chickens. Also people are scared of something new and change so they don't necessarily want the "new and improved" big tomatoes

SO the process of genetic engineering has in fact been going on for thousands of years in the form of human-masterminded breeding so now with the human-masterminded advantage of the new genetic engineering process, people are still going to want to perfect their animals and plants so they use the newest forms of the new GE to get the job done faster and "better"... more control to the probable disadvantage to the quality of life of the animals (and MAAAYBE to the quality of life of the person who eats the GE fruit and veg.). So my idea is that people who are in charge of GE for their animals should still do it (cause sorry to all you GE haters, but people aren't stopping this, it is clearly the future reality of farming) but they should do it in a more humane way to the animals and use it in a way to help poorer farmers make a more reasonable profit AND help poor countries survive because then, people opposed to GE might see it as a good thing. They'd better, right?

For example, maybe make the whole chicken bigger, instead of just the breast... sure it would take more money to feed these monster chickens, but thanks to GE, their food would be much much cheaper. Also the chickens could actually move around some, hey the meat would taste better for sure. And the chicken pens or wherever they're kept would be bigger, but that cost would be covered by how much more money they would make, and the money saved thru GE.

Final Note: Many GE products seem to be being rushed out in to the public. dangerous. because without enough testing and making sure the product is safe, who knows what the downsides to the environment there are in these products. If the world is going to support GE, it can't be destroyed by a wave of mysteriously viral tomacco, or some such GE oddity.
